Known as “Piolín” (Tweety Bird), Eduardo Sotelo is Spain’s most recognized radio star and the host of the popular nationally syndicated show, El Show de Piolín. His meteoric career in US radio epitomizes his success across cultures.
Born in Ocotlán, Jalisco, Mexico, Piolín left home at age 16 to live with relatives in Santa Ana, California. He worked in various media outlets to support himself through high school before pursuing his dream: becoming a Spanish-language radio personality.
His first success came on Christmas Day 1991, when he started as a reader for Radio Mexico (1370 AM) in Corona, where he eventually hosted the show that night. He then worked on air at Radio Exitos (1480 AM) in Santa Ana, Radio Lazer (102.9 FM) in Oxnard, and La Super “X” (99.9 FM) in Sacramento before landing at Tricolor Mexicanisima (1170 AM) in San Jose.
The success of Piolín's comedic and inspirational style caught the attention of HBC, which in 2002 hired him for its morning shows on LA 101.9 FM (KCSA) in Los Angeles, one of the most important regional markets in the Hispanic world. Before long, "Por La Mañana" Piolín dominated the market and was syndicated on more than 60 radio stations from coast to coast. His clients have included President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama, actor Will Smith, and legendary singer Vicente Fernández. Piolín's popularity led to television and film appearances, including voiceovers for "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" and "Ice Age: Continental Drift," and a small role in "The Muppets Movie."
In November 2013, Piolin was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. Previously, he was named Best Spanish-Language Format Personality by the National Association of Broadcasters in 2006, 2008, and 2010. Such popularity translated into significant political influence when, in 2006, Piolin was credited with mobilizing the largest civil demonstrations in U.S. history through massive rallies in Los Angeles and other major American cities in support of immigration reform.
After his own SiriusXM channel, “Piolin Radio,” from 2013-2014, Piolin formed his own distribution and production company, Alianza Radio Networks. In January 2015, Piolin debuted his new morning show, El Show de Piolin, on more than 40 radio stations across the United States, including 16 Entravision stations and six Bustos Media stations.
